    Digital Tectonics as a Morphogenetic Process

    p. 938-948Tectonics is a seminal concept that defines the nature of the relationship between architecture and its structural properties. The changing definition of the symbiotic relationship between structural engineering and architectural design may be considered one of the formative influences on the conceptual evolution of tectonics in different historical periods. Recent developments in the field of morphogenesis, digital media, theories techniques and methods of digital design have contributed a new models of integration between structure, material and form in digital tectonics. The objective of this paper is to propose and define tectonics as a model of morphogenetic process. The paper identifies and presents the manner in which theory and emerging concepts of morphogenesis as well as digital models of design are contributing to this new model. The paper first analyzes the historical evolution of tectonics as a concept and characterizes the emergence of theoretical framework reflected in concepts and terms related to morphogenesis.Oxman, R.     ABSTRACT On the basis of analysis of the current state of the art key concepts and issues in the application of performance-based design in architecture are defined. Future directions for performance-based model that couple principles of evaluation and generation are proposed. Here generative and modifications of a design can be automatically achieved employing processes controlled by analytical and numeric findings. Instead of simulating the performance of a design, and re-design it after analysis and evaluation, it may be possible to directly inform, generate and automatically modify the design using performance-based simulations. The ability to directly manipulate the geometric properties of the digital model is defined and demonstrated

    Performative design: a performance-based model of digital architectural design

    Though design for building performance is traditionally considered an evaluative act, current developments in the theory and technology of digital design are promoting new directions for performance-based models of design. This paper presents a theoretical basis for understanding the current shift in performance-based design and proposes a model of performance-based design in architecture, termed performative design. Automated processes related to the impact of environmental forces on form generation in digital design are the content of experimental processes upon which the paper reports. In the theoretical introduction the terms performative design and performative architecture are defined and discussed. Topics related to the current movement towards performance-based design in architecture, such as the role of topology, parametric design, associative geometry, and generative processes, are presented, and their implications for, and influence upon, performative design are discussed. An experimental design example in architectural design is demonstrated to illustrate various methodological issues in performative design.

    Despite the long-term effort to establish the theoretical foundations for Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) in design, it appears that additional theoretical efforts are needed in order to achieve the promise of this affinity. In this paper we argue that visual reasoning, is a fundamental attribute of architectural design, and therefore combining it with CBR may provide significant results both for the field of design thinking as well as for the field of CAAD. This paper focuses on reformulating theoretical foundations for CBR in design by incorporating insights from studies in fields like visual imagery and creativity, where visual reasoning is recognized to play a key role. Within classical CBR research, however, visual reasoning has not received much attention until now. Instead, researchers have concentrated on traditional issues and topics in CBR such as indexing, retrieval and adaptation.
